Description

Introduction Infants and children with cow's milk protein allergy or lactose intolerance are required to follow a dairy-free diet at a time when adequate nutrition is critical for optimum growth and development. As such, healthcare professionals' roles become pivotal in ensuring that a child's nutritional status is not compromised. Accurate figures for the prevalence of lactose intolerance among young children are difficult to ascertain. However, it is widely understood that approximately 2% of infants and young children in the UK suffer from cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) (Sicherer, 2002), making it the most common food allergy among children.
